Homemade reed diffuser: refills and fragrances to make your own

Reed diffusers

A reed diffuser is a bottle filled with a scented blend and a set of reeds that draw it up and release the fragrance into the room. You can refill it with our high-concentration refills or make your own at home with a concentrated fragrance.

Ready-to-use reed diffuser refills

If you'd rather not mix the blend yourself, pour the refill into your bottle, add the reeds and you're done. Ten high-concentration scents in a 1 L container; only the refill is shipped, without bottle or reeds.

What you need to make a homemade reed diffuser

  • A narrow-necked glass bottle, so the blend evaporates slowly.
  • Rattan or fibre reeds, which absorb the blend and diffuse the scent.
  • A diffuser base, the liquid that carries the fragrance.
  • A concentrated fragrance, which sets the intensity and how long the scent lasts.

As a guide, many recipes use 15 to 25% fragrance in the total blend. Start at the lower end and go up if the room is large. Always check the safety data sheet of each fragrance.

We explain it step by step in our guide How to make a homemade reed diffuser.

Away from heatAvoid direct sun and radiators: they speed up evaporation.
Fewer reedsMore reeds give more intensity, but the blend runs out sooner.

Frequently asked questions

Can you make a homemade reed diffuser with fabric softener and alcohol?

It's a very popular home hack, but the scent usually lasts less and is less stable than with a concentrated fragrance. If you want a long-lasting result, use a diffuser base and a fragrance.

What about essential oils?

Yes. Bear in mind that essential oils are more volatile and the scent is noticeable for less time. You'll find our selection in essential oils.

How long does a reed diffuser last?

It depends on the bottle size, the number of reeds and how well ventilated the room is. A narrow-necked bottle and fewer reeds make it last longer.

Can I sell the reed diffusers I make?

Yes, but you need to label them according to the CLP regulation and have their safety data sheet. We explain it in legislation on selling candles and scented waxes.
