Essential oils for candles: which to use and how much to add

Natural scent for your candles

Essential oils give candles a 100% natural scent, extracted from plants, flowers and citrus fruits. They work very well in soy candles and room diffusers, as long as you choose heat-stable oils and stick to the right dosage.

How much essential oil to add to a candle

  1. As a guide, many candles made with essential oils contain 6 to 10% of the wax weight.
  2. Never exceed the maximum stated on each oil's safety data sheet and IFRA certificate.
  3. Add it once the wax is off the heat, at a moderate temperature, so it doesn't evaporate.
  4. Let the candle cool and set completely before lighting it.

To calculate exact grams, use the candle calculator.

If you're going to sell your candles

Many essential oils contain allergens and substances that require pictograms and warning statements on the label under the CLP regulation. We explain it in selling candles in the EU: GPSR, CLP and IFRA.

Frequently asked questions

Can essential oils be used in soy candles?

Yes. Soy wax holds natural scents well. Bear in mind that the scent will be softer than with a fragrance oil.

Why does my essential oil candle barely smell?

Essential oils are volatile: if they're added too hot or in too small an amount, the scent is faint. We explain it in why a scented candle doesn't smell.

Can they be used in reed diffusers and room fragrances?

Yes. See how on our homemade reed diffuser page.
