Xanthan Gum – Natural Thickener for Cosmetics

Xanthan gum, a natural polysaccharide obtained by fermenting starch, usually from corn, with the bacterium Xanthomonas campestris. Supplied as a fine cream-coloured powder, it thickens, stabilises and gels water-based formulas, prevents phase separation and acts as a co-emulsifier. It can be used hot or cold.

• Viscosity: 1200–1600 cps.
• pH: 6.0–8.0. Stable across different pH ranges.

Tips for use

• Disperse in water or hydrosols, sprinkling slowly to avoid lumps.
• Mix by hand or with a blender until fully incorporated to activate its thickening power.
• Suitable for cold or hot process (40–70 °C).
• Guideline doses: 0.2% for light viscosity, 1% for medium texture and 2% for a firm gel.
