Description

Cetyl Alcohol (Lanette 16) – Co-emulsifier for Creams

Cetyl alcohol, also known as Lanette 16, is a key cosmetic ingredient used as a co-emulsifier, thickener, and emollient agent. It appears as white flakes and is ideal for formulating creams with a professional texture.

At Naturcera we offer cetyl alcohol of 100% plant origin, perfect for making natural cosmetics and advanced formulations.

What is cetyl alcohol?

Cetyl alcohol (Cetyl Alcohol) is a plant-derived fatty alcohol used in cosmetics to stabilize emulsions and improve the texture of creams and lotions.

It is part of the natural co-emulsifiers, so it must be combined with other emulsifiers to obtain stable formulations.

What is cetyl alcohol used for?

It is an essential ingredient in cosmetic formulation:

  • ✔️ Co-emulsifier (binds aqueous and oily phases)
  • ✔️ Thickener (adds body to creams)
  • ✔️ Emollient (softens and hydrates the skin)
  • ✔️ Emulsion stabilizer
  • ✔️ Improves texture and skin feel

Uses of cetyl alcohol in cosmetics

Used in a wide variety of products:

  • Facial and body creams
  • Moisturizing lotions
  • Nourishing creams for dry skin
  • Balms and hair products
  • W/O formulations (water in oil)

👉 Especially recommended for creams with high fat content.

Key properties

  • Provides creamy and stable texture
  • Improves skin hydration
  • Reduces water loss from the skin
  • Provides a smooth and velvety finish
  • Facilitates ingredient emulsification

How to use cetyl alcohol

  1. Incorporate into the oil phase
  2. Melt between 45–52 ºC together with the oils
  3. Heat the aqueous phase separately
  4. Mix both phases and stir until cooled
  5. Add actives and fragrances below 35 ºC

Recommended dosage

  • 2% – 10% depending on use

Examples:

  • 2–5% → co-emulsifier / emollient
  • 5% → water absorption
  • 2–10% → to add consistency
