Microcrystalline wax: what it is, uses and formats

Candles, cosmetics and industry

Microcrystalline wax is a mineral wax with very fine crystals. It is more flexible, more adhesive and has a higher melting point than paraffin. That is why it is used as a candle additive, to give body to balms and cosmetics, and in industrial applications such as adhesives.

Frequently asked questions

Is microcrystalline wax the same as paraffin?

No. Both are mineral waxes, but microcrystalline wax has finer crystals, is more flexible and adhesive, and melts at a higher temperature.

Can you make a candle from microcrystalline wax alone?

It is not usual. It is used as an additive to a paraffin or other wax base to improve how it behaves.

Which grade should I choose?

64-70 for candles and general use, the cosmetic grade for balms and petroleum jelly, and the adhesive grade for technical applications. If in doubt, email us.

Do you sell it in bulk?

Yes. See our wholesale wax page or ask us for a quote.
