Pearled candle wax: how pearl candles work at home, at events and in hospitality

Cera perlada vertida directamente en un recipiente con mecha para montar una vela

A pearled wax candle is a container filled with loose plant-wax pearls and a wick pushed into them: nothing is melted beforehand, only the wax right around the flame. Once it is out, that wax sets into a crust you lift out with the spent wick, top up with fresh pearls, and the same container is ready again. That is why pearl candles work so well at home, on event tables and in restaurants.

In 30 seconds

  • Heat-resistant container, pearls up to the height you want, a straight wick with only a few millimetres showing. Done.
  • With several wicks, keep 5–6 cm between them and between each wick and the edge.
  • For planning, allow roughly 0.5–0.6 kg of pearls per litre of container (approximate: weigh your filled container once).
  • Refilling: lift the crust with a spoon, add pearls, fit a new wick. No scraping, no washing.
  • Naturcera sells it from 1 to 750 kg: from €9.00/kg down to €4.55/kg depending on volume.
Materials for this guide

For this guide, start with candle waxes that fit the final application, then validate the complete formula in a small test before scaling.

What pearled candle wax is, and why you don't melt it

Naturcera's pearled candle wax is a blend of 100% plant waxes in pearl or granule form, with no paraffin or petroleum derivatives. With a classic candle you melt the wax, pour it and wait for it to set. Here the wax is already in the container, solid and loose: the flame melts only a small circle around the wick, and the surrounding pearls soak up that liquid wax like a sponge.

In practice: no pan, no thermometer, no pouring temperatures and no waiting for the wax to set. The visible surface always looks the same, white matt pearls. Each burn uses only a little wax, and the rest of the pearls stay as they are for next time.

How to make a pearl candle

Five steps to set up a pearled wax candle: heat-resistant container, fill with pearls, push the wick in straight, a few drops of fragrance, light; below, top views with 1 wick in a 12 cm bowl, 3 in an 18 cm bowl and 4 in a 30 × 12 cm tray
The 5–6 cm rule decides how many wicks fit in each container.
  1. Pick the container. Heat-resistant glass, ceramic or metal. It should be stable and hard to knock over.
  2. Fill with pearls. To whatever height you like, leaving a margin below the rim so the flame does not sit level with the edge.
  3. Push the wick in straight. Only a few millimetres should show above the pearls. A long wick means a tall flame and smoke.
  4. Add fragrance. A few drops of candle fragrance or essential oil around the wick before lighting.
  5. Light it. Never leave it unattended, and keep it away from draughts, curtains and anything flammable.

How many wicks: the 5–6 cm rule

The product page asks for at least 5–6 cm between wicks and also between each wick and the edge. That gives you the number of wicks without any complicated maths:

ContainerWicksPlacement
Round, under 10 cmNot recommendedThe 5–6 cm to the edge can't be met and the glass gets too hot.
Round, 10–12 cm1In the centre.
Round, 16–18 cm2–3Two in a line or three in a triangle, 5–6 cm apart.
Tray, 30 × 12 cm4One row down the middle, 5–6 cm apart.
Tray, 40 × 20 cm8–10Two staggered rows.

Naturcera's pre-waxed wicks with a metal base, ECO or cotton, do the job. If the container is deeper than the wick (15 cm), that's fine: the pearls hold it up and it doesn't need to touch the bottom. To choose the size, start in the middle of the range and watch the flame: if it stays small and drowns, go up; if it grows tall or smokes, go down. There is more detail in our guide to choosing wicks.

How much pearled wax do I need?

Loose pearls leave air between them, so a litre of container weighs much less than a litre of solid wax. For planning, count on about 0.5–0.6 kg per litre. It is a cautious estimate that depends on pearl size and how much they settle. The reliable way is to weigh your container empty and full once and write the difference down.

ContainerApprox. volumePearled wax
Bowl, Ø 10 × 6 cm0.5 L≈ 0.25–0.3 kg
Bowl, Ø 12 × 8 cm0.9 L≈ 0.45–0.55 kg
Bowl, Ø 18 × 8 cm2 L≈ 1–1.2 kg
Tray, 30 × 12 × 6 cm2.2 L≈ 1.1–1.3 kg
5 L vase or lantern5 L≈ 2.5–3 kg

The volume of a cylindrical container is π × radius² × fill height. An 18 cm bowl filled to 8 cm: 3.14 × 9 × 9 × 8 ≈ 2,035 cm³, so about 2 litres.

Refilling and reusing the container

Refill cycle of a pearled wax candle: light, put out and let cool until a crust forms, lift the crust with a spoon, top up with fresh pearls; on the right, a table of quantities per litre
The melted wax ends up in the crust; the rest of the pearls are still good.

This is the clever part. After each use:

  1. Put it out and let it cool. The wax that melted around the wick hardens into a crust attached to it.
  2. Lift out the crust. With a spoon it comes out in one piece, along with what is left of the wick.
  3. Fill the hollow. Add fresh pearls back to the previous level.
  4. New wick. Push it in straight with a few millimetres showing, and the candle is as good as new.

No scraping the glass, no hot-water washing, no throwing out a half-used candle because it tunnelled. The crusts aren't rubbish either: they are plant wax with a little fragrance, and you can melt them into homemade wax melts.

Tip

If the crust sticks, wait until it is completely cold: it shrinks slightly and comes out more easily. After a short burn you can sometimes just pull the wick and leave the small crust in place.

Fragrance and colour

Fragrance. The simplest way is the one on the product page: a few drops of candle fragrance or essential oil around the wick before lighting. You can change scent every time, which is handy for a restaurant that wants something soft at lunch and nothing at dinner. If you would rather scent a whole batch, mix a small amount of fragrance into the pearls in a closed container and let it absorb; soaked pearls clump and burn worse. Keep it light in a dining room: the scent should sit in the background, not compete with the food.

Colour. The pearls are white and matt, and that's their appeal: they go with any tablecloth. For colour, the easy route is the container (coloured glass, ceramic, brass) or decorative elements kept well away from the flame. If you want to dye the pearls, test a small amount first and do a burn test: the wrong colourant can clog the wick.

In a restaurant the usual routine is to top up and change wicks at closing time and keep a bag of pearls in the store room. At events you can set up dozens of centrepieces in a morning without a kitchen and take back whatever wasn't burnt.

Safety

It is a real candle: open flame, a container that gets hot. Never unattended, away from napkins, decorations and staff walkways, on a heat-resistant surface. Respect the distance to the edge: a narrow glass with the wick close to the side overheats.

If you work at volume

For a restaurant or an events company, measure consumption per refill (weigh the pearls you add each day for a week) and multiply. That tells you the format: from 25 kg the price drops to €6.00/kg, and at 750 kg to €4.55/kg. If you sell refillable candle kits, pearled wax can also be repacked. FAQ

Do you have to melt pearled wax?

No. You fill the container with pearls, push in a wick and light it. Only the wax around the flame melts.

How much pearled wax fits in a 1-litre container?

Roughly 0.5–0.6 kg, because there is air between the pearls. For an exact figure, weigh the container empty and full once.

How far apart should the wicks be?

5–6 cm from each other and 5–6 cm from each wick to the edge. A 10–12 cm round container takes one wick; a 16–18 cm one takes two or three.

How do you reuse the container?

Once the candle is cold, lift out the wax crust that formed around the wick with a spoon, top up with fresh pearls and fit a new wick.

How do you scent a pearl candle?

With a few drops of candle fragrance or essential oil around the wick before lighting. That way you can change scent every time.
